Koh Phangan is an island located in the Gulf of Thailand in South East Thailand. Blessed with some of the most spectacular beaches in Thailand and an unspoiled interior, is famous for its Full Moon Party at Haad Rin Beach. Koh Phangan is an ideal destination for those looking to party, relax, indulge in the beach, or practice outdoor activities.
Koh Phangan (can also be spelled Ko Phangan) is part of the group of islands that make up the Samui Archipelago. It is located about 100 km off shore the east coast of Suratthani province in the Southern Gulf of Thailand and about 15 km north of Koh Samui. The area of this island is 168 square kilometres and its main town is Thongsala, on the southwest coast.
Koh Phangan is a large, mountainous jungle island covered with coconut trees and surrounded by white sand beaches and blue pristine waters. The preservation of almost half of its surface, a large part of it is a national park, allows the island to keep its natural and untamed character, and its wonderful and “untouched” land-scapes.
Years ago the island was a backpackers destination. Nowadays a more mixed range of travellers visit the island, from honeymooners to families with children. While each month thousands of young people attend the world famous Full Moon Party in Haad Rin, Ko Phangan is perfectly suitable for those looking for a relaxed and easy-going island with quiet and wilder surroundings in a preserved environment.
Most well-known for its monthly Full Moon Party, Koh Phangan offers nightlife in abundance yet is also a natural paradise with waterfalls, tropical beaches, mountains, streams, rare birds, reptiles, jungle and much more.
The island has numerous heavenly white sand beaches all along its coastline most of which are still only moderately developed and some of them are reachable only by boat. Whether you like beach or jungle, quietness or party, all of it you will find in Ko Phangan.
There are many activities you can enjoy in Koh Phangan: diving, snorkelling, tours by longboat, jeep safaris, hiking, trekking, Thai cooking classes, yoga and meditation, Thai boxing classes, kayaking, sailing, day trips to other Islands, elephant trekking, bars and restaurants with many choices of Thai and international cuisine, and a vibrant nightlife. There is something for everyone here.
Remember that if you are into party and nightlife, one of the largest and best beach parties in the world takes place here, the famous Full Moon Party!
